Fine Motor Bin
A fine motor skills centre bin will be used to help students develop their fine motor skills in fun, interesting, and engaging ways. Materials that will be in this bin include hole punchers, brightly coloured paper, straws, scissors, string, pennies, buttons, and plastic beads. Most, if not all of these materials can be found at the dollar store, making this bin a cost-effective way to help students with their fine motor skills.
The hole punchers and brightly coloured paper will aim at targeting students who need to build muscles in their hands. Students will use the differently shaped hole punchers to punch little pieces of paper out. Then, they will have to pick up all the little paper holes and shapes they’ve created and place them in the bin (Davenport, Peterson Magnuson, & Derrick, 2018).
Therapy putty (Davenport et. al, 2018) is used to hide small objects that can be found around teachers’ houses (ie. pennies, buttons and beads, etc.). Students have to use their finger muscles and the strength of their hands to find the hidden objects.
Students can cut straws to be used as beads to create necklaces, chains, and bracelets. This is a great fine motor activity as students can build their small finger muscles. An added bonus is that students can play around with their straw beads to string together different patterns.
