Class Library
A class library is essential to a kindergarten classroom, as it gives students the opportunity to read and be independent when choosing literature to focus on.
Our library is set up to include seating for students around the library to more fully engage them in the library setting, and to create a welcoming and safe environment. Small couches, a carpet, bean bag chairs, and flexible seating will be available to students, as well as alternative lighting to avoid using harsh fluorescents interrupting natural reading. This library is placed in the corner of the room opposite of the door and far from collaborative work tables in order to decrease noise pollution and to maintain a quiet area. The calming corner will be adjacent to the library, which will promote quiet work as well.
The library will feature a large book collection, with various genres that are labelled with easily recognizable images that are familiar to students and don’t require the ability to read to find something accessible. Books will be organized in bins to allow students independance to chose and return books as they read them. Difficulty levels will range from simple phonics and images, to more complex stories and picture books.
